format:

logline:

alternative romantic comedy

Mini-DV

"A boy and a girl overcome their terminal hip-ness to find true love."

notes:

I lit, shot, edited, and sound designed this short written and directed by Robie Kentspeth.

cine:

The script was written as a freeform travel into and out of the minds of the denizens of a coffee shop, finally settling on one couple in particular.  To support that vision, the director desired a roving camera and a minimum of coverage.

Oh, and we had one night to shoot and only six evenings to post!

lighting:

The Hideout Coffee shop has an excellent array of track lighting that we used to great advantage.  Virtually all of the lighting in the interior comes from this built-in "grid."  We added only three cine lights from our truck;

o the exterior 1Kw Baby with CTO hitting the front and coming in through the windows;

o a 1Kw Baby with diffusion in the entry alcove, and;

o a Lowel Pro Light for the sunset painting gag.

set:

Other than some costuming choices pulled from the actors’ wardrobes, we had no time for any real production design. Fortunately, the Hideout has a great look and often sports a showing of a local artist’s work.

Artist Rebekah Thedford’s canvases really worked in the frame, creating a nice backdrop to our story.

Artist (and key grip) Joe Kentspeth  painted a last-minute oil canvas to serve as the “hero” painting.

audio:

Even at four in the morning, the interior location was somewhat hostile to sound with the compressors for the cold cases cycling on and off.  Coffee shop manager Greg Nelson and his daughter Mary were very kind in providing us the space and staying the night with us. We felt it best to leave their foodstuffs intact.

As such, we replaced every piece of production audio with ADR, voice-overs, Foley, wild sound, and music-for-picture. There is not a single bit of original production sound in the final mixdown.
