"Zombie Jesus" . short film
Production partner and writer/director, Carla Feldpausch, called on me to shoot, edit, and sound design this heartfelt short about universal love...
...and zombies.
"Withdrawn" . 48hr short film
Our 48-Hour Project team won the cinematography award for this short narrative written, shot, and edited in two days flat. With a five-ton grip truck, two cranes, and dolly at my disposal, I used a total of three lights, a bit of diffusion, and static shots for the entire shoot. The script really called for contemplative framing and constrained movement to support the isolated world the protagonist has created for himself.
"North Blvd." . short film
An emotional ride through Bethany's turbulent adoptive family leading, eventually, to the inevitable first phone call to her birth mother. This short film is the prelude to the feature length project currently in post. I shot, graded, and edited.
"Hard Water" . spec trailer
A quick shoot and color grade I did for director, "Ben Snyder." The goal; to imply a hot, dry world in which our characters are trapped.
"Cell: The Web Series" . narrative series
Excerpts of tension building and a fight-sequence conflict
When series DP, Iskra Valtcheva was unavailable for a re-shoot, producer, Mark Gardner, hired me to shoot the ending of this webisode series. He needed to step up the production value of the final story beats in order to blend more seamlessly with the next season's aesthetic.
In this final episode, the protagonist escapes a prison cell only to discover she has been held captive in a seemingly benign suburban neighborhood. But the truth runs deeper still.
"El Coyote" . spec trailer
Writer / director Jay Galvan and producer Jolyn Janis approached me to shoot a spec short for a feature. This dark scenario of drug runners (the "Coyotes" of the title) torturing a doctor and his family was designed to evoke the tone of the larger film to follow.
"One Hit Wonder" . spec trailer
I shot this web series spec short for writer/director Josh Frank.
"Sketch" . short
"Sketch" is a short film by writer/director, Christian Remde. The location, with its north-west facing corner, helped deliver a soft, open look to the piece. Coordinating our angles to the time of day to avoid the westering sun allowed us to shoot through the entire day. A couple overhead silks and Kino 4BANKS completed the look.
"Shroud" . feature film
First-time feature film writer/director, David Jetre, broke all the low-budget film making rules: no period pieces, no animals, no weapons or fights... "Shroud" is a super-natural western thriller shot on a shoe-string budget and available locations. Despite the limitations, David's clever use of locations, rented historical props, and Civil War re-creationists as the antagonists delivered the level of production quality called for in a period drama like this. I was honored to light and frame this picture.
"A Swinging Trio" . feature film
This first-time feature by writer/director, Kelvin Phillips pits a blocked writer with his successful movie producer wife... and her lover? Mamet-esque dialogue meets the tight locations and framing of a Woody Allan film.
Shot in ten days in the director's home and a local bar, I lit this for easy turn-arounds and to allow the actors to find shadows or light as needed by the story and their emotional place. The great-room was top-lit on the walls with a couple stand-mounted 1K fresnels bouncing off reflection (white or soft silver as needed) to project the "light" bouncing from the out-of-frame walls into the scene.
"In The Shadow" . feature film
Shot on the island of Culebra in Puerto Rico, this full-length narrative follows the dark path taken by a spiritual healer as his healings take their toll on his soul. A pick-up shoot on an interior set matched the exterior lighthouse location.
"Monster Job Hunter"
I gaffed this imaginative short by director, Yehudi Mercado, for DP, Jen White. I designed the train passing gag - two 2K open-face instruments pointing at a spinning mirror box.
And, yes, that's me as the "monstrous" boss.
